How To Send Yourself Your Music

We only have two more days left of class. You might want to send yourself some of your tracks so that you can listen to them at home or put them on your mp3 player. I'm going to show you how to email your songs to your self.

Open your mail.ccpaedu.com account.
Compose a New Mail.
Select Attach File.
Browse your computer for the song you want.
Make sure you select the MP3 version of the song!
Address the mail to your email.
Send!
Do that until you have sent yourself all the songs that you want to keep.

Check your Email!

This is a remix I did with the Flo Rida track Low. I like the chord progression that I used because it uses elements from songs like 'For Your Love' and Bobby Darin's 'Spilsh Splash.' I was having a hard time with the drums but then I got a new program called BFD2 and it had the sounds I was looking for. I hope you like it and feel free to leave a comment!

Exporting Your Song and Publishing on Your Blog

Today we are going to continue working on our Tell Me When To Go remix. If you have finished your remix then follow the steps below to publish it. If you still need to work on the remix. Find the step you were on last week and continue from there.

Listen to your remix. Is it finished? If so, continue with the steps below. If not open the lesson from last week and continue from where you left off.
Open your the song you were working on Friday, go to the File menu and select Export Song as Audio File, this converts the song into a file that can be played on Windows Media or a CD.
Name Your Song and Click Save.
Click Export.
Open your email, email mrprice@ccpaedu.com the Reason File for your song.
Use the mp3 converting program on your computer to turn your wav file into an mp3.
Go to imeem.com and log into your account.
Go to your imeem.com homepage.
Click Upload.
Select Upload Music and Put On My Profile.
Click Upload.
Browse the computer and find your song in mp3 format.
Click Start Upload.
After it has finished Uploading, go to embed and COPY the code to embed the song.
Log into your blog.
Create a New Post and PASTE the code into the post.
Write 4 sentences about the song.

Tell Me When To Go Remix Day 2

Yesterday we started making a beat to go along with the chorus of the song Tell Me When To Go. Today we are going to put our beat into song format and add the vocals for the Verses.

Create a new Web Browser and Log into your email.
Open the message I sent you called "Tell Me When To Go Verses" and download the attachments.
Open your Tell Me When To Go Remix.
Make sure you have all the parts Copied to Track.
Highlight all your parts.
In the Edit window, select Copy.
In the Edit window, select Paste until you get to 105.
Now, delete the TellMeHook between the following bars...1-9, 17-33, 41-57, 65-89, 97-105. This will create space for the Verses.
Move your loop points between L17 and R33.
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner of your new Dr. Rex.
Select the TellMeVerse1.rx2 and click To Track.
Move your loop points between L41 and R57.
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner of your new Dr. Rex.
Select the TellMeVerse2.rx2 and click To Track.
Move your loop points between L65 and R89.
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner of your new Dr. Rex.
Select the TellMeVerse3.rx2 and click To Track.
Now, create the different sections of your song by deleting parts. For example, in the Intro, you might want to delete the drums. In the Verses, you might want to delete your melody.
Once you have all your different sections, save your beat.
Chill!

Tell Me When To Go Remix

Do you remember at the beginning of the class when we remade the Tell Me When To Go beat? Well now that were at the end of the class we're going to bring it full circle and do a remix of Tell Me When To Go.

Today we are going to start with the Chorus and build our beat around the lyrics.

Open Reason
Create the M-Class Mastering Suite Combi
Create a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
Select the TellMeHook.rx2 from the Desktop.
On the Dr. Rex click TO TRACK.
Set the Tempo for your song. The original Tempo is 107 bpm but if you'd like to try a different tempo, go for it!
Create a Redrum.
Make a 32 step drum pattern with...
A clap, snap, or snare drum on 5 and 13
A Bass Drum on 1 and a few other boxes
At least two other sounds from the High Hat folder, Percussion Hi, Percussion Other, FX, or Glitch.
Copy the Pattern to Track.
Create one of the Soft Synth Instruments and the Matrix.
On the Matrix make a melody with the volume up on between 3 and 7 notes that goes with the Foreigner Samples. Make the melody in either Octave 4 or 5.
Copy Pattern to Track.
Create a Dr. Rex and find a Percussion Loop to Copy To Track.
Add another part using another Dr. Rex or a Soft Synth with a Matrix.

Today, you will be given the chance to do something similar to this track. Did you hear how Robin Thicke sang the same Chorus as Foreigner? Well today I brought in the original chorus so that you could add it to your song.

Open your Foreigner Remix.

Move your cursor to 81.

Foriegner Remix pt. 2

Today we're going to continue with our remix. After you have put all your parts together, copy and paste your parts to 33 in the sequencer window and begin to make your sections (Intro, Chorus, Verse)

Finish making all the parts for your remix based on the instructions from yesterday's assignment.
Make sure all the parts are copied to track.
Highlight all your parts and Copy and Paste them to 33.
Work on your intro from 1-9, take out a part such as the Redrum.
Work on your verse from 17-33, take out a part such as the melody to give space for a vocalist.
Save your beat.
Write a blog post about the similarities between Rock and your favorite type of music.

Foriegner Remix

Last week we took a beat and made it into our first song. Today we are going to start a beat that we will turn into a song by Friday. For our inspiration we will turn to the Rock band Foreigner and their song "I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight"

I have created two samples from the song for you to use in your remix. Remember change the TIME and PITCH of the sample to make your remix unique.

Open Reason
Create the M-Class Mastering Suite Combi
Create a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
Select either the Foreigner1 or Foreigner2 sample from My Documents: Tuesday Feb, 19th
On the Dr. Rex click TO TRACK
Now we want to adjust the PITCH and Time of the sample.
To do this, you will need to do two things. Change your tempo. And transpose the sample on the Dr. Rex keyboard.
If you choose a high tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a higher note.
If you have a slow tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a lower note.
SECRET TIP: If you want an insider tip, ask me or Ian.
Also, try using both samples so they play one after the other.
After you get your samples sounding the way you want it, it's time to add some drums that go with the sample.

The Verse and More!

Yesterday, we worked on our Intros for our beats by taking out a part such as the drums or the bass line. Today we are going work on making our Verse section and then Copy and Paste the Chorus and Verse so that we have 3 Verses for our song.

Open the Song you were working on yesterday.
If you did not finish your Intro, take out the drum beat from 1-9
Now we can work on the Verse.
Remember, from last week, the verse is the part of the song that tells the story and is different every time.
We want to create space for a vocalist in our verse.
From 17-33, delete the melody from your song.
Now, we have 3 sections. The Intro from 1-9, the Chorus from 9-17, and the Verse from 17-33.
Highlight all the parts between 9-33.
In the Edit window, select Copy.
In the Edit window, select Paste two times.
Now Highlight all the parts between 9-17.
In the Edit window, select Copy.
Move your cursor to 81.
In the Edit window, select Paste.
From 81-89 Create an Outro by deleting all the parts except for your melody.
Save your beat!

Intros

Yesterday we copied and pasted our beats to the 33rd bar. They are now ready to be put into song format. The format we will be using is:

INTRO 1-9
CHORUS 9-17
VERSE 17-33
CHORUS 33-41
VERSE 41-57
CHORUS 57-65
VERSE 65-81
CHORUS 81-89
OUTRO 89-97

Today we are going to focus on the INTRO. Your intro is the first impression people get when they hear your song. It's like when you meet someone for the very first time, you can't tell the person your life story in a sentence, but you can give them an idea about you and your personality in the way that you greet them.

The best intros make the listener want to hear more, the worst make the listener skip to the next song. The intro usually drops one of the parts from the beat. If you drop the drums or the bass line, it can cause some tension, and bring the listener in.

Did you notice how the drums weren't playing during the intro?

Take 15 minutes and listen to the intro of a favorite song on the internet.
Compose an email and answer the following questions
Do you like the intro?
What parts of the beat are playing during the intro?
What parts of the beat aren't playing during the intro?
If you could go back and change one thing about the intro, what would it be?

Now, open up the song you were working on yesterday.
Focus on the Intro from 1-9.
Delete a part such as the drums or bass line to "Introduce" your beat.
Save your beat.

Putting Your Beat Into Song Format

Open the beat that you sent to me on Friday.
Make sure you have all your parts Copied To Track.
Highlight all your parts.
Go to the Edit Window, Select Copy.

Move the Right Loop Point to 33.
Paste your parts until you get to the Right Loop Point.
Save your beat.
Write a blog post about the kind of lyrics that you like.

Making Beats

This week we've been talking about the different parts of a song, the Verse and the Chorus. Remember! The Chorus is where the main idea of the song is found as well as the title...it's the hook!. The Verse is where the details of the song are found, if a song is a story, then the verses are like chapters.

Today we are going to start out with something that is going to be on the quiz tomorrow. We're going to listen to this song and you are going to write down the order of the song sequence.

The Verse

In the last two classes, we talked about the Chorus, the catchy part of the song that is the central idea of a song.

Today we are going to talk about the Verse. The Verse is the part of the song where the story is told. Typically a Pop or Hip Hop song has 3 Verses that are each 16 bars long and separated by the Chorus...for example: Intro/Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Verse/Chorus/Outro

Go online and find a song that you like.
Open your email, compose a new email, and answer the following questions.
What is the title of your song?
How many verses are in your song?
Write the lyrics of the first verse.
Does the title appear in the verse?
How many lines are there in the first verse?
How many bars are there in the verse?
What are the different instruments you hear in the verse?

The Chorus

As of Friday we have learned the basics of how to make drum beats in Reason using the Redrum. Adding Loops from Dr. Rex. And creating melodies and bass lines using Soft Synths and the Matrix.

Today, we are starting a new section of the class. We will be turning our beats into full songs, converting them into mp3 format, and then posting them on our blogs.

But first we have to understand the different parts of a song. We will start with the chorus.

The chorus is the theme of a song, where the idea is delivered. Melodically, the chorus is the catchy, repetitious part of a song that you can sing along with. The chorus is also called the Hook because it's the part of the song that "hooks" you in. Lyrically, the chorus' job is to summarize the idea and emotion of the song in a general way and to hammer home its title.

The chorus is typically 8 or 16 bars long, which is 4 or 8 lines of lyrics.

The most important part for the chorus is to have the same melody and the same lyrics each time the chorus is repeated.

Go online and find a song that you like.

Write the lyrics of the chorus.
Where does the title appear in the chorus?
How many lines are there in the chorus?

Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo between 70-110 bpm
Create a Redrum.
On Pattern 1, make a 16 step drum beat using a Clap, Snap, or Snare, Bass Drum, and two sounds from the Hi Hats, Percussion Hi, Percussion Other, FX, or Glitch.
Copy the Pattern to Track between the loop points L1-R3.
Move your loop points to L3-R5
Select Pattern 2 and make a 32 Step Drum Beat.
Copy the Pattern To Track and move the loop point L back to L1.
Create any one of the"Soft Synths" (Combinator, Subtractor, Malstrom, NN19, or NNXT)
On The Soft Synth, click on the folder in the upper corner.
Go to the Patches Folder in Reason Factory Sound Bank and select a Bass for your Soft Synth.
Create a Matrix so that we can hear the sound coming out of the Soft Synth.
On the Matrix, move the Octave down, on the left from the keyboard, from 3 to 2.
Now, turn the Volume down on all the notes except the first step.
Create a rhythm with the steps on the Matrix that is similar to your Bass Drum.
Change the pitch of the notes on the Matrix to make a Bass Line.
After you have your bass line and you are happy with the sound, move the Right Loop Point to R3.
Copy Pattern To Track.
Now, move your Right Loop Point to R5 and your Left Loop Point to L3.
On the Matrix, move from Pattern 1 to Pattern 2.
On the Matrix, change the steps from 16 to 32.
Now, turn the Volume down on all the notes except the first step.
Think about which steps you used in Pattern 1, in Pattern 2 you want to use similar steps but make a different Bass Line.
When you have your bass line sounding good, Copy Pattern To Track.
Move your Left Loop Point to L1.
Create a Dr. Rex, load in a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop and select To Track.

Today, I want to give everyone a chance to finish the Bass Line assignment.

When you are finished with the Bass Line assignment from yesterday, follow the lesson below on how to make your own Bass Line.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2

Create a Combinator
On The Combinator, click on the folder in the upper left hand corner.
Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Combinator Patches: Bass: and choose any of the basses in the folder
Create a Matrix so that we can hear the sound coming out of the Combinator.
On the Matrix, move the Octave down, on the left from the keyboard, from 3 to 2.
Now, turn the Volume down on all the notes except the first step.
Bass Lines are a lot like Bass Drums because they are both in the low frequencies. Think about the boxes you put the Bass Drum on and put your Bass Line on the same steps with the Matrix.

Now Create a Redrum and change the steps from 16 to 32.
Start with a Clap on 5 and 13 for boxes 1-16 and 17-32.
Now add a Bass Drum, do you remember which steps you put your bass line on? Use similar steps for the Bass Drum.
Add two more drum sounds such as a High Hat and Percussion-Hi.
When you have made your drum beat, Copy Pattern To Track.
Create a Dr. Rex, load in a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop and select To Track.
Save your beat as (Your Name) First Bass Line

Last week we worked on creating melodies using the Matrix. This week we are going to start making bass lines. So unlike last week where we moved the Octave switch up on the Matrix, this week we're going to move the Octave switch down!

To demonstrate this technique we are going to remake the bass line from Too Short's single "Blow the Whistle" then recreate the drum beat. Too Short- Blow The Whistle (instrumental) uploaded by beanycastillo

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo at 100 bpm
Create a Subtractor
On The Subtractor, click on the folder in the upper left hand corner.
Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Subtractor Patches: Bass: Dodger Bass.zyp
We need a way to add the Bass line from Blow the Whistle, which is in C minor...Create a Matrix!
On the Matrix, change the steps from 16 to 32.
On the Matrix, move the Octave down, on the left from the keyboard, from 3 to 2.
Leave the Volume up on 1, 4, 7, 11, 13, 17, 20, 23, 27, and 29. After you have moved the volume down on all the other numbers it should look like this.
On steps all the steps that still have volume, move the red rectangle to the bottom box (C) of the Matrix.
On steps 11 and 13, move the note up 3 steps.
On steps 27 and 29, move the note up 5 steps.
When you are done it should look like this.
On the Matrix, right click and Copy Pattern to Track and move the boxes in the Sequencer Window up to the Subtractor Track.
Create a Redrum.
Listen to the Instrumental of Blow the Whistle.
What sounds do they use?

Recreate the drum beat from Blow the Whistle.

On today's quiz we are going to make an 8 step melody and then on a new pattern we will play the melody up an octave.

After the quiz write a blog post about your three most favorite highlights from this class over the first six weeks.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo to anything between 70-110 bpm
Create a Malstrom
On The Malstrom, click on the folder in the upper left hand corner.
Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Malstrom Patches: Mono Synths: Choose your favorite sound!
Create a Matrix!
On the Matrix, change the steps from 16 to 8.
You may want to change the Matrix from Octave 3 to Octave 4, or maybe down to Octave 2.
Now turn the volume off on three of the steps.
Create a melody using 3 notes from the C minor scale on those five steps that have volume.
Now, move your Right loop point to R3.
Right Click on the Matrix and select Copy Pattern To Track.
Move the Right loop point to R5 and the Left loop point to L3.
On the Matrix, Select Pattern 2.
Move the Octave Switch up one Octave from the one you are on.
On the Matrix, change the steps from 16 to 8.
On the Matrix, draw in the EXACT same melody that you created in Pattern 1.
Right Click on the Matrix and Select Copy Pattern To Track.
Move the Left loop point to L1.
Click the Pattern Button on the Matrix.
Create a Redrum and make a 32 step drum pattern using a Clap or Snap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on appropriate boxes!
On the Redrum, Copy Pattern To Track and turn the Pattern Button off.
Create a Dr. Rex.
Click on the Folder and go to My Documents: Shared Files: Thursday, Jan 24th: SnapYoFingas
On The Dr. Rex, click To Track...and "push play"
Change the Pitch of Lil Jon's voice using the keyboard on the Dr. Rex. If you have a fast song, make the pitch higher. If you have a slow song, make the pitch lower.

Changing the Octave and Making 2 Patterns on The Matrix

Today we are going to play 'Snap Your Fingers' on the Matrix. We will be learning how to change the Octave on the Matrix and how to make two patterns.

After you create the melody, listen to the instrumental and recreate the drums.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo at 82 bpm
Create a Malstrom
On The Malstrom, click on the folder in the upper left hand corner.
Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: Malstrom Patches: Mono Synths: Chingy Lead.xwv
We need a way to add the melody from Snap Yo Fingas, which is in C minor...Create a Matrix!
On the Matrix, change the steps from 16 to 8.
On the Matrix, move the Octave switch, on the left from the keyboard, from 3 to 4.
Turn the Volume off on notes 4, 6, and 8.
On Steps 1 and 2, click on the lowest note boxes to bring the notes up to the 4th Octave from the 3rd Octave.
On Step 3, click on the 4th box up.
On Steps 5 and 7, click on the 3rd box up.
It should look like this.
Now, move your Right loop point to R3.
Right Click on the Matrix and select Copy Pattern To Track.
Move the Right loop point to R5 and the Left loop point to L3.
On the Matrix, Select Pattern 2.
Move the Octave Switch from 4 to 5.

Repeat lesson steps 10-13.

On the Subtractor, click on the folder in the upper left hand corner.

Change the number of steps on the Matrix from 16 to 32.
Turn the Volume off on all the notes EXCEPT: 1, 3, 7, 9, 17, 19, 23, and 25. After this step your Matrix should look just like this.
On the 3rd Step, move the note up 7 spots.
On the 9th Step, move the note up 8 spots.
On the 19th Step, move the note up 8 spots.
On the 25th Step, move the note up 7 spots.
After these steps, your Matrix should look like this.

Crank That Coliseum

Yesterday we played the C minor scale, both up the scale and down the scale, using the Matrix.

Today we are going to recreate the Crank Dat Soulja Boy melody which is in C minor.

After we make the melody you will create your own melody using C minor.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo to 70 bpm
Create a NN-XT Digital Sampler
Click on the Folder in the upper left hand corner of the NN-XT.
In the Patch Browser, click Orkester Sound Bank: Mallets: Glockenspiel.smp
Now that we have our sound loaded we need to create a Matrix to play it.
Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
We want to use the Matrix to play a the melody from Crank That Soulja Boy.
First, turn the volume down on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 15th, and 16th steps.
Now on step 1, move the note up 12 spots.
On step 4, move the note up 7 spots.
On step 7, move the note up 8 spots.
On step 11, move the note up 12 spots.
On step 14, move the note up 7 spots.
When you are done it should look like this.
How many notes have the volume on?
How many different notes are there?
Now, create a Redrum and make a 16 step drum pattern using a Clap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on appropriate boxes!
Or instead of a Clap, try putting a Snap on 5 and 13 just like Soulja Boy.
When you finish your Drum Beat, Copy Pattern To Track.
Now we want to revisit the NN-XT and the Matrix.
On the Matrix, change the pattern to PATTERN 2.
Turn the volume down on all the steps.
Create a melody with the notes from C minor, with the volume up on 5 of the steps in the Matrix, using between 3 and 5 different notes.
When, you are done with your melody, right click on the Matrix and select Copy Pattern To Track.
Click the Pattern button on the Matrix.
Highlight all the boxes on the Matrix in the sequence window and drag them up to the NN-XT track.

The minor scale and the Matrix

Yesterday we made a melody (the part of a song you sing along to) with the C Major Scale and on Monday we played the C Major scale on the Matrix.

Today we are going to create the C minor scale using the Matrix.

The difference between the C Major Scale and the C minor Scale is that the 3rd, 6th, and 7th notes of the C minor scale are one step below those notes in the C Major Scale.

Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Create a NN19 Digital Sampler
Click on the Folder in the upper left hand corner of the NN19.
In the Patch Browser, click Reason Factory Sound Bank: NN19 Sampler Patches: Guitar: ACGUITAR.smp
Now that we have our sound loaded we need a way to play it...ENTER THE MATRIX
Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
We want to use the Matrix to play a C minor Scale both up the scale and down the scale.
First, change the STEPS on the Matrix from 16 to 32.
Now, let's turn the volume down on the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 24th, 26th, 28th, 30th, and 32nd step.
On the 3rd step, move the note (the rectangle) up 2 notes.
On the 5th step, move the note up 3 notes.
On the 7th step, move the note up 5 notes.
On the 9th step, move the note up 7 notes.
On the 11th step, move the note up 8 notes.
On the 13th step, move the note up 10 notes.
On the 15th step move the note up 12 notes.
On the 17th step move the note up 12 notes.
On the 19th step, move the note up 10 notes.
On the 21st step, move the note up 8 notes.
On the 23rd step, move the note up 7 notes.
On the 25th step, move the note up 5 notes.
On the 27th step, move the note up 3 notes.

The song Rubberband Man by T.I. and produced by David Banner uses a melody based off of the C MAJOR scale. Let's recreate the melody and then add our on drums.

Now that we have our sound loaded we need a way to play it...ENTER THE MATRIX
Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
Now we want to create the melody for T.I.'s song.
The first step is....the steps. This melody is 2 bars long so change the steps from 16 to 32 on the Matrix.
Now we need to turn the volume down on all the steps we aren't going to use. Leave the volume on on STEPS 1, 8, 10, 11, 17, 24, 26, and 27. For all the other STEPS, turn the volume off.
Now we can change the notes of the steps we have left.
On STEPS 8 and 10, move the note up four spots.
On STEP 11, move the note up five spots.
On STEP 17, move the note up seven spots.
On STEPS 24 and 26, move the note up 11 spots.
On STEP 27, move the note up 12 spots.
When you're done with the melody it should look like this:

The Major Scale and the Matrix

Today we are going to start a new section on creating melodies in Reason using the Matrix. But first we need to understand a little more music theory. In music, musicians use scales as the frame for their melodies. There are two basic types of scales, the Major Scale, which has a happy sound, and the minor scale, which has a somber sound. You hear the Major Scale a lot in Pop Music. And you hear the minor scale a lot in Hip Hop music. Today we're going to learn the Major Scale. And more specifically the C Major Scale.

The Major Scale is made up of seven distinct notes, plus an eighth which duplicates the first an octave higher. These notes correspond to the syllables "Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, (Do)". The simplest major scale to write or play on the piano is C major, the only major scale not to require sharps or flats, using only the white keys on the piano keyboard:

Go to the Create Menu and select the Matrix, all the way at the bottom of the menu.
We want to use the Matrix to play a C Major Scale.
Look at the Matrix, do you see the keyboard? We can use this to help us put the NOTES (the red rectangles) on all the white keys.
Below the NOTES in the Matrix, do you see the lines? These move up and down and control the VOLUME.
To make the C Major Scale we are going to move every other note up to the next white key. (I moved the NOTES in between all the way up to the top so that they wouldn't be in my way.)
After I've moved all my NOTES, I want to turn the VOLUME all the way down on the NOTES I don't want to hear. After you finish this step, your MATRIX should look something like this.
Listen to your scale, does it sound like Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do?
Save in your folder as C Major Scale.
On your blog write about the following questions:

To do this we need to change two things.

Review For Thursday Quiz

We are going to have our Friday quiz on Thursday this week. On Friday, you'll get to catch up on quizzes you've missed, work on blogs, and get some free time.

The object of the quiz is to change a Dr. Rex Instrument Loop or Music Loop by lowering or raising the Pitch and making the Tempo different from the original loop.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
Select either Dr. Rex Instrument Loops or Music Loops.
Choose a loop and then click "TO TRACK"
Now we want to adjust the PITCH and TIME of the sample.
To do this we need to change two things. To change the Time, change your Tempo. Set it to anything except what it says on the Dr. Rex.
To change the Pitch, use the keyboard on the Dr. Rex to transpose your sample up or down.
Remember, if you choose a high tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a higher note. If you have a slow tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a lower note.
After you get your sample sounding the way you want it, it's time to add some drums that go with the sample.

Today we're going to remix Kanye West's song The Good Life. But before we get started let's listen to the song.

Do you recognize the sample? It comes from the Michael Jackson song PYT.

What did Kanye do with the sample?

So, like Kanye I want you to change the PITCH and TIME of the PYT sample and make it your own.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
Select the PYT sample from My Documents: Tuesday Jan, 8th: PYT
On the Dr. Rex click TO TRACK
Now we want to adjust the PITCH and Time of the sample.
To do this, you will need to do two things. Change your tempo. And transpose the sample on the Dr. Rex keyboard.
If you choose a high tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a higher note.
If you have a slow tempo you might want to transpose the sample to a lower note.
After you get your sample sounding the way you want it, it's time to add some drums that goes with the sample.
Create a Redrum and make a 32 step drum pattern using a Clap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on appropriate boxes!
On the Redrum, Copy Pattern To Track.
Create a Dr. Rex. Load a Percussion Loop and adjust the PITCH. Put it "To Track."
Save your beat as The Good Life
Write a blog post about what the good life means to you.

It's a new year and we're back making beats. Today let's start off where we finished and get our feet wet with a Dr. Rex beat!

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.
Select either Dr. Rex Instrument Loops or Music Loops.
Choose a loop and then click "TO TRACK"
Now set your tempo to the same tempo as your loop.
Create a Redrum.
Change the Steps to 32.
In Sound 1, load a clap and put it on boxes 5 and 13.
Now toggle "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
Put the clap on boxes 5 and 13
Toggle "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
In Sound 2, load a bass drum and put it on 1 and a few other boxes that go with your loop.
Now toggle "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
Put the bass drum on 1 and a few other boxes that go with the loop.
Toggle "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
In Sound 3, load a high hat and put it any boxes...make sure it goes with your loop.
Now toggle "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32
Click on boxes that go with your loop.
Toggle "EDIT STEPS" back to 1-16
In Sound 4, load either a percussion-hi or percussion-other and put it any boxes...make sure it goes with your loop.
Now toggle "EDIT STEPS" to 17-32

Once you're happy with how your drums sound right click on the Redrum and select Copy Pattern To Track.
Don't forget to click on the Pattern Button.
Now let's add a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop.

Open Reason
Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
Create a Dr. Rex
Click on the "Folder" in the upper left hand corner.

Open Reason

To get to Ian's secret loops... go to: Reason Factory Sound Bank: Music Loops: Variable Tempo: Downtempo Loops.

Today we are going to introduce a new instrument: The Dr. Rex Loop Player!

Set Tempo to 95 bpm
For this exercise, let's make a 32 step beat!
Create Redrum
In Sound 1 on the Redrum, load a Clap and put it on 5 and 13.
In Sound 2 on the Redrum, load a Bass Drum and put it on 1, and a few other boxes (except 5 and 13).
In Sound 3 on the Redrum, load a Hi Hat and put it on boxes that sound good.
In Sound 4 on the Redrum, load a Percussion sound and put it anywhere.
Now, we want to edit steps 17-32.
Change the steps of the Redrum from 16 to 32.
Move the Edit Steps from 1-16 to 17-32.
Repeat steps 6 through 9.
Now that you've finished making your pattern, it's time to Copy Pattern To Track.

Now create a new Reason Document and make a new beat following the steps in this excercise and select your own Dr. Rex Instrument Loop.

How to add a link list

This is the way to add a link list your Blogger blog.
For today, I want you to add 5 links. These can be your friends, favorite sites, our class blog, or any web site.

Sign into the Blogger account, and you will see a list of your blogs (See screenshot below. Click to enlarge):

Click on "Layout" and the Layout page will open (see screenshot. Click to enlarge):

Click on "Add a Page Element" and a "Choose a new page element" pop-up will appear (see screenshot below):

Choose link list, and click "Add to Blog" and a "Configure link list" will appear.

Type in the title, leave the "No of links to show in this link list" empty, type in your target site URL and then the description of that target site (what you would like to be displayed. For an example, see the screenshot directly below).

Click "Add Link" and the link will be added and appear at the bottom of the pop-up. In the screenshot below, what you will see displayed at the bottom of the pop-up will be the link "Blogger Tips and Tricks" which had been added by clicking "Add Link".

There is a drop-down menu "Sorting" which when you click on the arrow will allow you to choose "sort alphabetically", "sort reverse alphabetically" or "don't sort". The default is "don't sort" and the links will be displayed in the order they are added.

Click "Add Link" and repeat the process, and the new link will be added to the earlier link at the bottom of the pop-up.

You can continue to add more links in the same way as described until you are satisfied (at least 5).

Then click "Save Changes" and you will be back to the Layout page. You will see a new "Link List" (in the example, instead of Link List, you will see "Blogs I like to read" which was the title of the link list) page element right at the top of the Layout sidebar.

If that is the position you want, then you can just leave it as it is and you job is done. However, if you want the link list elsewhere, you can place the cursor over the link list Page Element and the cursor will change to a cross:

and you can drag and drop it into whatever position you want. You can view the outcome of that action by clicking on "Preview" at the top of the Layout. If you are satisfied with the position, click "Save" at the top of the Layout:

Redrum Practice 11/29

Open Reason
If you don't see a mixer: go to the CREATE menu and select a Mixer 14:2
Set Tempo to 82 bpm
CREATE: Redrum Drum Machine
Click on the Folder Icon in the bottom left hand corner of the Redrum.
From there click on the Reason Factory Sound Bank:Redrum Drum Kits:RnB Kits: RnB Kit 01
Push SELECT on Sound 2 (Sd_SupaDu). Click on Boxes 5 and 13
Push SELECT on Sound 1 (Bd_SupaDu). Click on Boxes 1,2,4,7,8,10,11,15 and 16
Push SELECT on Sound 8 (HH2_SupaD). Click on all the boxes!
Push SELECT on Sound 4 (Sh_SupaDu). Click on Boxes 3,7,11, and 15.
SAVE YOUR BEAT IN YOUR FILE IN MY DOCUMENTS!!!!!!!
Now Click on Pattern 2 and create your own beat with a Clap or Snare, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and One other sound.
Remember! start with a Clap (clp) or Snare (sn) on boxes 5 and 13!
And put your Bass Drum on 1 and a few other boxes.
Put your Hi Hat (HH) anywhere.
Put your Other Sound anywhere.
SAVE YOUR BEAT!!!!!!!

How to make a Redrum Drum Beat

Open Reason

CREATE: Redrum Drum Machine
Click on the Folder Icon in the bottom right hand corner of the Redrum.
From there click on the Reason Factory Sound Bank:Redrum Drum Kits:Hip Hop Kits: Hip Hop Kit 07
Push SELECT on Sound 3. Click on Boxes 5 and 13
Push SELECT on Sound 5. Click on Boxes 1 and 11
Push SELECT on Sound 1. Click on all the boxes
Congratulations! You have made your first beat!
Now Click on Pattern 2 and create your own beat with a Clap or Snare, Bass Drum, and Hi Hat.
Remember start with a Clap (clp) or Snare (sn) on 5 and 13
And put your Bass Drum on 1 and a few other boxes.
Put your Hi Hat (HH) anywhere.
